Kolaval: A Retreat for Peace, Gratitude, and Regeneration in the Mayan Highlands

Hello loved ones, 

We live in a time of upheaval and possibility. We face climate disruption, social fracture, and a culture that measures worth by material gains. Many of us long to feel peaceful, well and whole. 

We want to breathe freely, and remember in our hearts what it is to be truly human. Many people are exploring ways to live simply, radiating kindness and gratitude while supporting  wellness for all beings.

In the Mayan highlands of Chiapas, the Tzotzil communities hold stable traditions of unity and peacemaking. ‘Kolaval’ means “thank you” in Tzotzil. The Kolaval Retreat Center is being built as a living expression of gratitude for the welcome we’ve received by the local indigenous community. It is in service to the regeneration of their gentle guidance and autonomous ways of living in harmony with the land, that this Center for retreat has begun to grow. So, what is Kolaval?

Nestled on 4,000 square meters of forested hillside, Kolaval is being built to honor the natural world and the soul of life, embracing our interconnectedness with the magnificent universe. As of October, 2025, Kolaval now offers a sanctuary where visitors and locals can pause, reconnect with themselves, and be nourished by nature, peace, community, and all the expressive arts.

A mosaic of farmers, travelers, musicians, children, artists, and builders have all shown up at our Work Parties and countless gratitude circles. Individual and small group retreats began over a year ago, with young adults from North America, England and Africa camping on the land for their much needed retreats in nature.  

It has been an honor to host Mayan elders, Tibetan monks, and the local indigenous community. A local Tzotzil community leader has been a core advisor since the very beginning, and has invited his extended family to the land many times. The sounds of Tzotzil, Spanish, English, and the languages of international visitors all mix as we gather for food, music, birthdays, ceremonies, and Work Parties! 

All our gatherings open with thanks to earth, waters, plants, animals, trees, sun, moon, stars, and more. This ‘ladder of gratitude’ follows the Thanksgiving Address, shared by the Haudenosaunee people of Turtle Island, so that we may begin together, experiencing shared unity, gratitude and remembrance of the sacredness of life. This ancient Haudenosaunee practice has greatly influenced the creation of the Kolaval Retreat center. (Read more about Luz Elena’s work with Chief Jake Swamp and the Words Before All Else here.)

As you arrive at Kolaval, a centralized gathering hall greets you, still under construction and aspiring to host a rocket-stove mass heater to keep us all warm through the cold and rainy seasons. On a lower level of the land, an open hearth is our central cooking area when it’s not raining. There, we host community gatherings and gratitude circles. This coming year, we hope to finish simple lodging sites for guests !

On the hillside above the main hall, rainwater is captured in a beautiful circular holding pool, critical for the hydration of plants and people through the dry season. All across the plateaued hillside, retaining walls are being built to stabilize the slope. These terraces are essential infrastructure to hold back erosion and to grow food. 

Everywhere you wander on Kolaval, the fertile soil is lovingly tended by the hands of visitors, earth-lovers, volunteers, and children, guided by permaculture principles and local indigenous techniques. Our young orchard of fruit trees and little herb and food gardens whisper their prayers of producing abundant food and medicine for all in the years to come! The Call to Gather in Gratitude:

As you read these words, the gardens are sprouting in the rain, and the community gathering hall is being protected from the downpours by our new roof. A HUGE THANK YOU to all who supported our 2024 fundraiser to RAISE THE ROOF in time for the torrents of seasonal rainfall !!

Now, we urgently need your help to finish stabilizing the south side of the structure so it stays strong and evades erosion. From there we can complete the community kitchen and central heater, install beautiful windows and doors on the building (they are mostly done!),  finish cabins and tent platforms for guests, and stabilize the terraces so the gardens can flourish.

Your support will go directly toward these practical needs that make the vision real. Every gift - whether it buys a load of stone for the retaining walls or fully funds the central rocket stove - brings Kolaval one step closer to becoming more of a working retreat for peace, creativity, art, gratitude, cultural remembrance, food production, and collective liberation.

Kolaval: Un Centro de Retiro para Cultivar la Paz, Gratitud y Regeneración, en Los Altos de Chiapas

Queridas almas,

Vivimos en tiempos de cambio profundo, y también de posibilidad. Enfrentamos la crisis climática, la fractura social y una cultura que mide el valor por las ganancias materiales. Mucha gente anhela sentir más paz, relajación y bienestar. 

Queremos respirar con libertad y recordar en el corazón lo que significa ser verdaderamente seres humanos evolucionando. Más y más personas buscan vivir sencillamente, compartiendo bondad y gratitud mientras cuidamos nuestra salud y el bienestar de todos los seres.

En las montañas mayas de Chiapas, las comunidades tzotziles sostienen tradiciones de unidad y paz. “Kolaval” significa “gracias” en tzotzil. ⁠ Kolaval  ⁠, el Centro de Retiro, está floreciendo como una expresión viva de gratitud por la bienvenida que hemos recibido de la comunidad originaria que nos rodea . 

Este espacio crece al servicio de la regeneración de la guía amable de esta gente humilde y fuerte. Estamos agradecidos también por sus formas autónomas de vivir en armonía con la Tierra.

Entonces, ¿qué es Kolaval: Centro de Retiro?

Anidado en una ladera boscosa de cuatro mil metros cuadrados, ⁠ Kolaval ⁠ se construye para honrar al mundo natural y al alma pura de la vida, abrazando nuestra interconexión con todo el universo. ⁠ Kolaval ⁠ ofrece un refugio donde visitantes y locales pueden tomar una pausa sagrada, conectarse profundamente con la esencia de la vida,  y nutrirse con la naturaleza, la paz, la comunidad y las artes del espíritu.

Un mosaico de campesin@s, viajer@s, músic@s, niñ@s, artistas y constructores se ha reunido en nuestras Fiestas de Gratitud y Círculos de Trabajo. 

Hace más de un año comenzaron retiros individuales y en pequeños grupos, con jóvenes de América del Norte, Inglaterra y África acampando en la tierra para reencontrarse con la naturaleza.

Ha sido un honor recibir a abuelas mayas, monjes tibetanos y a la comunidad indígena de estas montañas. Un líder comunitario tzotzil ha sido consejero esencial desde el principio, invitando a su familia extendida muchas veces a compartir aquí. Los sonidos del tzotzil, el español, el inglés y muchos otros idiomas se mezclan mientras convivimos; celebrando, tocando música, creando arte y trabajando en comunidad.

Cada encuentro comienza con agradecimientos a la tierra, las aguas, las plantas, los animales, los árboles, el sol, la luna, las estrellas y más. Esta “escalera de gratitud” sigue la tradición de “Las Palabras Antes de Todo” compartida por el pueblo Haudenosaunee de la Isla Tortuga. Estas palabras de agradecimiento nos ayudan a comenzar un convivió con sentido de paz e unidad, en manera sagrada hacia  el mundo  natural. Esta práctica ancestral ha inspirado profundamente a la creación del Centro de Retiro ⁠ Kolaval. ⁠

Al llegar a ⁠ Kolaval, ⁠ usted puede ver el edificio comunitario, aún en construcción, que pronto contará con una estufa de masa “rocket” para mantenernos calientes durante las temporadas frías y lluviosas. En un nivel más bajo del terreno, un fogón abierto sirve como cocina comunal durante días de sol . Allí realizamos algunos círculos de gratitud y los encuentros comunitarios. Este año esperamos terminar unas dos o tres cabañas sencillas para recibir huéspedes.

En la ladera superior, hacia el este, el agua de lluvia se recoge en una hermosa olla de agua circular. Esta agua es necesaria para las plantas y las personas, en la época seca. A lo largo del terreno se están construyendo muros de contención para estabilizar la pendiente, detener la erosión y cultivar alimentos.

Dondequiera que camines en ⁠ Kolaval  ⁠, la tierra fértil está cuidada con amor por visitantes, voluntari@s, niñ@s y amantes de la Tierra, guiados por principios de permacultura y saberes indígenas de este territorio . Nuestro joven huerto de frutales, y las hierbitas y hortalizas están susurrando sus oraciones para poder ofrecer abundante alimento y medicina en los años que vienen. 

El Llamado a Reunirnos en Gratitud:

Mientras lees estas palabras, los jardines brotan con la lluvia y la casa comunitaria está protegida por nuestro nuevo techo. ¡UN GRAN AGRADECIMIENTO! a ustedes quienes apoyaron la recaudación del 2024 para LEVANTAR EL TECHO antes de las tormentas del temporal.

Ahora necesitamos su ayuda para terminar la cocina comunitaria y el calefactor central, instalar las hermosas ventanas y puertas (¡ya casi listas!), finalizar las cabañas y plataformas para huéspedes, y asegurar las terrazas donde florecerán los jardines.

Su apoyo va directamente a estas necesidades esenciales que hacen real la visión y nos ayudan a servir a más gente ! 
Cada donación—sea para comprar una carga de piedra o para financiar la estufa central— nos acerca a la meta ; que ⁠ Kolaval ⁠ es un espacio de retiro vivo, bondadoso, apoyando la paz, la creatividad, el arte, la gratitud, la vida cultural, la producción de alimentos y la liberación creativa y colectiva.
