The Beach Institute is one of Savannah's first schools built after Emancipation, specifically for African Americans. As a cultural center, the Beach Institute collects, interprets, preserves, and presents African American history and culture through exhibits and artistic and educational programs.

Updating the garden, initially installed in 2010, is imperative for several reasons, especially considering the need for maintenance and the desire to incorporate new elements. The original design may have become outdated or overcrowded due to plant growth. Updating the garden allows for a fresh approach to the layout, ensuring it remains visually appealing and functional.

We will introduce medicinal herbs and historically significant plants to add diversity to the garden, enriching its ecological value and providing educational opportunities for visitors. It will foster a deeper connection to the garden's historical context, the experiences of enslaved individuals, insight into traditional healing practices, and highlight the resilience and ingenuity of past generations.

We do this in partnership with Tyriq Small and his Boy Scout troop. He has taken on leadership of this project. His vision includes a beautiful garden that incorporates sustainable practices.

We seek donors and sponsors who are willing to invest in the future of our garden, to help finance the materials needed to bring Tyriq's vision to life. Your contributions will directly support the acquisition of plants, the procurement of wood for an arch and small shed, and the supplies necessary to retrofit our gutter system for installing rain barrels. For sponsors or donors who contribute $5000 or more, we will proudly install personalized bricks or pavers adorned with your name or the name of your choosing within the garden grounds. These permanent fixtures will serve as a timeless tribute to your generosity and commitment to our community.
