Founded in October 2020, Sur Legal Collaborative is an immigrant and worker rights organization based in Georgia. We seek to democratize legal knowledge and provide advocacy, education, and legal support to build the power of grassroots movements fighting for economic, racial, and social justice in the Deep South.

In the two years since our founding, we've made impressive strides towards building inclusive worker power in Georgia and beyond. Earlier this year, we partnered with a local clinic to provide 8 weeks of free mental health counseling to survivors of the FFG nitrogen and ammonia leaks.

Just some weeks later, on the anniversary of the ammonia leak, the same facility experienced a bleach spill—its third in just 14 months. Thanks to our prior relationship building with this community and because they were empowered with the knowledge of their workplace rights, the workers at the facility refused to stay silent and reached out to us to report the chemical leak.

And Sur’s work extends far beyond Gainesville. For example, in a review conducted at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital, one department found that the majority of non-English speaking individuals hospitalized for a work-related injury were Spanish speaking. We formed an interdisciplinary partnership with a research team at Grady to develop a hospital-based intervention toolkit with an emphasis on occupational safety and health.

These are just a few examples of how financial support from generous individuals like you allows Sur to help immigrant and working-class communities in Georgia.

By educating and empowering immigrant workers about their rights in the workplace and fighting to end the labor abuse to deportation pipeline, Sur is working hard to meet the need in a state with some of the weakest worker protections and harshest immigration policies in the country.
