History. Education. Advocacy. We believe words matter and education is an important tool to help defeat xenophobia and racism. Since December 2010, we have distributed over 10,000 Toolkits to teachers in all 50 states and 12 countries worldwide. During the pandemic, we extended our Digital Toolkits to parents and families teaching kids at home. We are updating our educational resources for teachers to include connections to present-day civil rights issues like political scapegoating, anti-immigrant sentiment, and the dangers of misinformation.

This year we celebrate 15 years of KI and also honor the 80th anniversary of Korematsu v. United States on December 18, 2024. The Korematsu Institute educates the public about the historical importance of Japanese American Incarceration during World War II, through the experience and case of Fred Korematsu, so that present and future generations can learn from the treatment of 125,000 Japanese Americans and reflect on what it means to have, or not have, equal justice under the law.

Woven together with Fred’s story and the importance and the historical impact of his court case, are the broader issues such as the right to due process in the Fifth Amendment, the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and the civil liberties guaranteed to every American citizen.
