For far too long, the United States immigration system has been in need of reform and modernization. Thousands upon thousands of individuals and families have fled their homelands due to strife, gang warfare, and victimization by their governments.

Today, there are approximately 11 million undocumented individuals who have been unable to obtain a path to citizenship in this country. Here on Long Island, there are an estimated 90,000 undocumented immigrants, predominantly from Central & South America (Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico) and Haiti who are looking to live secure, safe and productive lives in the U.S. women. Although many are essential workers who have risked their lives to serve and protect American communities during the current pandemic, their lack of status prevents them from enjoying the return to a secure way of life in the future. These individuals and their families very much want and need to be here legally; Yet with their very limited financial means and the lack of enough attorneys to provide pro bono services to help them file their asylum applications, their path to regularize their status is effectively blocked.

The Long Island Immigration Clinic will give these individuals assistance on two levels:

1. Educating and assisting them in substantiating their asylum request application;

2. Preparing them to advocate for themselves in court in the event they do not secure an attorney. Clinic services will address the volume of the population in need and will expedite the reduction of the backlog in immigration courts.

The Long Island Immigration Clinic (LIIC) has as its primary mission to be a welcoming presence to undocumented immigrants and assist them in gaining legal status to remain in this country, to educate them in their legal rights, and to become successful advocates on their own behalf in court proceedings as well as the broader immigration forum.

The Long Island Immigration Clinic will officially launch in the beginning of 2022 but we need your help to ensure our Immigrant Friends can receive the most comprehensive care possible.
