Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, over 42 million Americans, including seniors, families with children, and people with disabilities, face the suspension of SNAP (food stamp) benefits starting November 1, 2025 NPR|NBC News. This is the first time in the program's history, dating back to the Great Depression, that SNAP has been disrupted this way CBS News.

Recipients receive an average of $187 per month, and many families rely on these benefits as their main source of money for food CBS News. For every meal a food bank provides, SNAP typically provides nine NPR making this crisis an enormous strain on emergency food systems already stretched thin by rising food costs and increased need.
