My tenure with AuSM goes back 20 years this summer. Twenty years ago, I fell in love with my community, and in the last nine years, I have had the privilege of being the Executive Director of an organization that proudly builds progress, inclusion, and acceptance for people with autism across every important sector of life, starting from within.
In these 20 years, I have been inspired by so much progress--so much good work done in a growing collaboration of families, community partners, and amazing advocates.
Make no mistake, the autism community is nothing if not beautifully complicated, and our work at AuSM always requires grit, nuance, and steady persistence. But, as I enter another year of service to this community, I have never seen the services, resources, and initiatives that are meant to protect, uplift, and enable autistic people in greater threat.
If you are inspired by the work I do with the autism community, show it! Be a part of our mission to create connection, to move the needle in equity, access, and inclusion, and to make autistic people feel embraced and supported by a community that knows them, values them, and wishes them safety, joy, and opportunity.
April may be over, but Autism and disability Acceptance requires our moral, social, and political energy every month of the year. I am forever grateful to those who ally with us. Be our ally! Be AuSM!
