The Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area's story is all about our continued fight to decrease the number of adults with low literacy skills, including 43 million in the United States and 18.8 % of adults in Virginia. Locally in Winchester, we have slightly higher literacy issues, while Frederick and Clarke Counties are in line with the state average. In our fight this year, 221 volunteers have helped over 214 students. All of this is possible due to the 3n staff members and all of those who contribute either their time, talent, or treasures. While I have only been at Literacy Volunteers since August, the volunteers' passion and the eagerness of the students to learn are infectious. I am excited to lead this organization into the future. With your help, we are ensured to make a long-lasting, generational impact on our community.

Your donation will support the core priorities like those listed below:

•Virtual Tutoring: No one could have planned for the impact the COVID-19 Pandemic would have on 2020. The staff and volunteers quickly learned Zoom and pivoted our in-person classes to a virtual platform to provide Literacy and Citizenship classes. This change opened up our ability to deliver programming from around the world to our students. Looking towards the future, we hope to have in-person classes back once it is safe, but we will continue our online models.

•Citizenship: For many in the world, becoming an American is a lifelong dream. LVWA is dedicated to helping prepare future citizens for the test and the government requirements so that they can fully realize their American Dream. Your gift helps improve our community by advancing essential literacy and citizenship skills for adults through education and advocacy and can impact someone getting a job, helping a grandparent read to their grandchild, or sending someone to college.
