Mustang Mare Merlot - Rehoming Campaign

Heartland Equine Rescue was recently contacted about an early 20's year old Mustang Mare, named Merlot.  She is a BLM mare that has lived where she is for many years.  Her companions have all passed on, and unfortunately her elderly owners are no longer able to properly care for her.  A nice relative of theirs reached out asking for help.  Our rescue isn't set up properly for these types of horses.  We didn't just want to tell the folks, sorry we can't help and just leave it at that. We believe as a rescue you should help people find other alternatives and not just say you can't help someone.   She is not halter or lead broke.   While she is friendly enough to let people near her, even children, she hasn't been worked with beyond that point.

Our folks at Embry's Horses & Tack have some other wild herd mares that are in a safe enclosure to live out their lives.  We'd like for Merlot to be able to go there as well and continuing living her life, with other companions.  They do plan to work with her though since she is approachable.  The hope is to work with her so she can possibly get adopted as a companion horse or remain there but at least be able to be worked with on a regular basis to further her friendship with humans.

In order to do this we need to raise $550 which will cover her transport costs to the training facility, and help with needed medical care that will have to be done right away for Merlot.

We understand some people have concerns rehoming a horse of this age.  She is in relatively good health, no lameness issues, and humane euthanasia isn't a consideration when there is no safe way a Vet could even do that at this point.  We also feel that she deserves to live out the rest of her life until it is her time to go, and be able to be with other equine companions, and people who are experienced in these types of horses.   Our rescue works closely with Embry's and will give any assistance we can as well to help Merlot.  We will be involved in her loading/trailering process as well.

If you can help Merlot get to where she is going, please feel free to donate, or share her story.

We truly appreciate your support.
