Not long ago, Thomas was chasing storms and dreams.
His goals were clear: attend the University of Oklahoma and become a storm chaser, tracking the skies with the same energy and curiosity he brought to every part of his life.
He was also an athlete— running cross country, biking, hiking Mount Washington, just another challenge to conquer.
But then Lafora Disease changed everything. Lafora is a rare and fatal form of epilepsy that robs young people of their abilities, their independence and, eventually, their lives. Its progression is devastating. In just a few years, Thomas went from thriving to fighting - from running trails to struggling to sit up on his own.
Thomas was part of the Lafora Natural History Study. Through countless appointments, tests and evaluations, Thomas helped researchers collect vital data to better understand Lafora’s cruel progression. His bravery and willingness to be studied — even though there would be no direct benefit to him — is now helping pave the way for future treatments. Today, a Safety Study is being conducted at UT Southwestern, TX., the same facility Thomas traveled to for the natural history study.
This safety study could change the course of Lafora for kids who are eligible. Your donation today will help fund this critical safety study — a step that could lead to real treatment, real hope, and real change. Please give. For the children who still have time.
