The Layne Project

Safeguarding lives of children in our community and providing access to justice in the family courts

In Johnson County, KS 1 in 4 kids is utilizing the free or reduced lunch program, yet there is no low or no cost supervised parenting time program, supervised exchange program, intensive coparenting program, divorce children’s group, or court involved therapy program.  A child in a paternity or divorce case does not have access to a Guardian ad Litem unless the parents can fund one.  Last week, 46% of Kansas households with children had difficulty paying for usual household expenses (2022). Since 2008 poverty has steadily grown across the metro area.  Sadly, 50% of marriages end in divorce, divorce often causes financial stress to families and their children.

The Court can identify the families’ needing services, and The Layne Project, Inc can provide the best mix of services for these families, however, families with financial hardships cannot access these services.  To provide true access to justice The Layne Project, Inc, needs a revenue source to provide court involved services to families in need.   Without community help and partnership, our communities’ children and their parents will be further traumatized, the duration and degree of family conflict will continue to fester, and the cycle will continue in future generations.

Johnson County is one of now eight (8) counties in the nation who have begun implementing the principals outlined in the Cady Family Justice Reform Initiative to shift to a domestic relations case processing approach that emphasizes problem solving and cooperation between parties, especially where children are involved.  https://www.ncsc.org/consulting-and-research/areas-of-expertise/children-and-families/cady-family-justice-reform-initiative/case-management/cady-principles.    The Layne Project, Inc  needs your help to provide the necessary emphasis on Principle 10 of the Cady Family Justice Reform Initiative, to identify and strengthen community partnerships.
