Legacy Partners ~ Building a Future

Housing is crucial for homeless young ladies to attend college for several reasons:

  1. Stability and Security: Having a safe and stable place to live is fundamental for anyone, especially for young women who are homeless. A secure living environment reduces the daily stress and danger associated with homelessness, allowing them to focus on their studies. Our dormitory provides an onsite dorm mom and a professional monitored security system.

  2. Health and Well-being:Our dormitory provides a foundation for good physical and mental health. Homelessness often leads to sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and exposure to violence, all of which can severely impact a young woman’s ability to perform academically. Our wellness center offers yoga classes, self care workshops and cooking classes to name a few.

  3. Academic Performance/Access to Resources: Our dormitory environment provides the necessary conditions for studying, completing assignments, and maintaining a regular schedule. Homeless students often struggle with finding quiet, safe places to study, which can hinder their academic success. We provide access to basic resources such as a stable internet connection, a student resource center with copy machine, access to a quiet space for zoom meetings, and more. In addition, each teen receives a new laptop computuer to keep upon graduation. These resources are critical for college students to complete their coursework and participate fully in academic life.

  4. Financial Stability: With stable housing, young women can avoid the financial strain of seeking temporary shelter or dealing with the costs associated with homelessness. This financial stability allows them to allocate their limited resources towards tuition, books, and other educational expenses. Our nonprofit has partnered with the Bridge to Hope to provide financial resources and access to funds outside of the FASFA. Moreover, we have partnered with HawaiiUSA FCU to provide financial wellness workshops and set up a savings account for their graduation goals.

  5. Social and Emotional Support: Our dormitory provide a community where young women can build relationships, share experiences, and support each other. This social network is vital for emotional well-being and can provide a support system that encourages perseverance in their educational goals. We provide a safe and nurturing student lounge that allows for these growth opportunities.

  6. Residency Programs with Life Skills and Financial Training: Our residency program  includes life skills and financial training workshops can empower young women with the tools they need for independent living. These programs can cover essential skills such as budgeting, cooking, time management, and job readiness, which are crucial for their long-term success. Workshop instructors are part of the community who volunteer their time and services throughout the year in our wellness center.

  7. Personal Mentorship/Life Coach: Offering personal mentorship programs connects young women with role models and advisors who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement. Mentors  help them navigate the challenges of college life, set and achieve personal and academic goals, and build a network of professional contacts.

  8. Future Opportunities: Education is a pathway to better employment opportunities and financial independence. Ensuring that young homeless women have stable housing, life skills training, and personal mentorship increases their chances of completing their education, which in turn improves their long-term economic prospects and breaks the cycle of poverty and homelessness. We are also so excited to have the open door relationship with the UH Bonner Program to allow each young lady the opportunity to a full 4 year scholarship program to pursue their masters degree of career choice upon their successful completion of our residency program.

In summary, providing housing for these homeless young ladies, along with life skills and financial training and personal mentorship, not only supports their immediate safety and well-being but also equips them with the necessary tools to pursue higher education and achieve a better future.
