At the bottom my substance use disorder, other mental health issues, and complete poverty had me stuck in a cycle of deprivation, danger, apathy and shame. The modest dreams I retained from more hopeful days were impossibly far away. How could I attend college if I couldn't even sign up for food stamps or reach a grocery store? Everything I enjoy today is contingent on my recovery. Nearly 13 years later, the life I am privileged to live today is one In could have never imagined: a spouse, a house, two degrees. Treatment and recovery services restored my autonomy,. allowing me to act in accordance with my values..I am blessed with a life worth living - something all our friends and neighbors deserve. I didn't get here by tightening my bootstraps. I was supported by peers, counselors, sponsors and coaches. I received the safety and scaffolding necessary to remake my identity. The journey from untreated substance use disorder to recovery is an effable change - one that is nearly impossible to achieve on one's own. Turning Point is needed more than ever.
