In honor of Black History Month, join us for an engaging conversation about the remarkable life and continuing legacy of Lucy Simms. Ms. Simms was born into slavery, studied at the Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), and dedicated her life to public service as a teacher in the Shenandoah Valley for almost sixty years. Recognized around the Commonwealth for her devotion to education, Lucy Simms will be one of ten African Americans featured on the planned Emancipation Proclamation and Freedom Monument in Richmond. Join WWPL President and CEO Robin von Seldeneck as she interviews Dale E. MacAllister, author of the book Lucy Frances Simms: From Slavery to Revered Public Service, and Karen Thomas, the founder and president of the Northeast Neighborhood Association in Harrisonburg.This event is broadcast live on ZOOM and will air at 7:oopm on February 18, 2021.
