LUNA Community Care is an innovative social cooperative that provides peer support, education, training, advocacy and community events, led by/for Neurodivergent, Disabled, trans and queer community members.
Our vision is to improve the quality of life for Neurodivergent adults, and to promote a shift in the culture, attitudes and acceptance of Neurodivergent, Disabled, queer and trans individuals in our community.
LUNA Community Care was created in response to our own lived experiences and the experiences of many of our peers. There are very few resources for Neurodivergent, Disabled, queer and trans adults and we are desperately in need of affirming and safe community spaces. We opened our doors on September 26, 2022. We provide programming for folks who feel as if the outside world wasn’t built for them. We support individuals who think, act and communicate in ways that are different from socially constructed norms. LUNA is a neuro-affirming, gender-affirming space where one can be their authentic self, without having to mask or be judged for our differences.
Our programming includes our drop-in support, special interest clubs, peer support groups, resources, self-advocacy & self-employment support, community events, workshops and training & consultation for businesses and organizations looking to improve disability inclusion. We were awarded top place in the RI Startup Week small business pitch competition in September 2022, and third place in the EforAll Pitch Competition in April 2023. We have received a great deal of positive press about our new organization (see links below).
While Neurodivergence is typically defined by our social-emotional and communication differences, when Neurodivergent peers are around one another, these differences are often met with understanding, acceptance and viewed as strengths.
