What you do not know about implicit bias can hurt you and others around you. We do not need to feel guilt or shame about having bias, because it is deeply human and something we all share! Implicit bias is a phenomenon that is not limited by race, gender or even country of origin.
We all have it, AND we can learn to work around it. Come learn more about what implicit bias is and how it can be diminished in our lives, workplaces, and community. What counts is what you do with your bias.

Implicit bias, also known as unconscious bias, is "the silent destroyer of good intentions." It is another way of saying automatic reactions. We often make judgments that are partially influenced by gender, race, or other factors, without realizing we have done so. These judgments are based on stereotypes or personal experiences and very few times are based on facts. Multiple studies have shown that those with a higher implicit bias against Black people are more likely to categorize non-weapons as weapons (such as a phone for a gun, etc.) If left unattended, implicit bias can show up in a variety of places and ways. It will show up in hiring practices, employee evaluations and even in our ideas.
Open that window by finding out your implicit bias around age, weapons, religion, weight, persons with mental illness...the list goes on. Take a free Implicit Associations Test prior to Leadership Academy to get the most out of the training. It's also a great way to learn about yourself! And remember, you are not alone. We all have implicit bias. What counts is what you do with it.
This presentation will be facilitated by Petrina Carter, who holds a Master of Science degree in Training and Development and has been conducting workplace development trainings for over fifteen years. Petrina is a very informative and engaging trainer who does not shy away from difficult subjects. She keeps you engrossed in the subject matter and allows learning to happen using various methodologies.
