MDE is a nonprofit school that serves students with special needs who can’t be at a traditional school because they suffer from profound language-based learning disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. Tuition only covers a portion of the program cost, not being able to have a fundraiser in person when COVID-19 happened, they did not get a lot of money, and students were delayed. They try to keep their tuition as low as possible so parents of special needs kids can have additional expenses to take care of their child. I chose to work here because they remind me of Stratford Friends School in many ways. I decided to be part of this work because I have many relatives who are cousins, etc., that are just like the student profile. MDE is unique because they keep this ratio of the teachers very small so students can achieve their potential. My job here is as a floating teacher, meaning I do not have an assigned class and go where needed. I either cover class like a substitute, or I get to pick where I want to go for classrooms and hang out with the students.
