Story

The mission of Mercy House is to provide food, clothing, and shelter to households with dependent children who are experiencing homelessness in the Harrisonburg, Virginia, area in a safe community, while providing services that overcome the barriers leading to homelessness.

Mercy House, in partnership with GiveSolar, is pursuing solar energy to support our family homeless shelter, located at 243 N. High Street in downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Families experiencing homelessness in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area can stay at Mercy House for ninety days, while our housing counselors help them address the challenges that led to their housing instability. We then help families obtain and sustain permanent housing through the Rapid Rehousing Program.

Mercy House will install a 14.58kW solar system on our main shelter building. Over 25 years, this system will save Mercy House over $60,000. In addition to solar energy reducing the carbon footprint of our operations, the savings from this project will lower our overhead cost and enhance our ability to achieve our core mission of ensuring every child in our community has a place to call home.
