The Alliance to Mobilize Our Resistance (AMOR) is fundraising for Damany Conde, a 21-year-old community member trying to survive in Providence, RI. Damany has been houseless for a long time now. Since getting diagnosed with COVID-19, he's been staying at a hotel since January 2021. We are hoping to fundraise to get him into a stable living situation and back on track to finish up his undergraduate degree.

From Damany:

Hi, my name is Damany Conde, and I have been in the U.S. for more than 15 years without papers. I was born in Angola, I have just turned 21 years old, and I have been here since I was 4 years old. I came here alone and first lived with my uncle, but he has now moved back to Africa. Since he left, I have no family here and also no support system. This has made it very difficult to sustain a normal life in America.

I was once going to college at Bristol Community College studying business management and playing on the basketball team, looking forward to being the first generation in my family to graduate from college. Unfortunately, my college career was cut short. I could not supply the proper funds to continue and could not complete the year. By trying to do the right thing and studying in school, I thought I would be okay in this country. However, paying out of pocket for classes proved difficult, and I was forced to withdraw. Since withdrawing, I have dealt with many troubling tasks, both physically and mentally, from staying on the streets to being kept in secluded conditions and shelters. Always feeling like I do not belong.

This has really brought down my hopeful spirit. Now I am left lost, not knowing what to do next. If I could just receive little support, I know it would positively impact my life, and I could turn things around. I do not receive any type of benefits or have income whatsoever, and I have no way to. It has been years.

AMOR is working with PrYSM and House of Hope in Providence to support Damany and get him the resources he needs. Our case manager at AMOR is currently in the process of moving forward with his DACA application, so he can hopefully receive state benefits and have his basic needs met. He plans to enroll at CCRI to continue his studies and play on a team again. Your donations will help us secure permanent housing and support his college education. Damany wished to find some semblance of a normal life again. He wants to find stability, security, and a community so he can have a support system again.

The amount provided would go towards the following:

First and last months rent to be paid upon moving into permanent residence: $1,600
Covering rent for the first 6 months: $4,800
Utilities for the first 6 months (gas, electricity, internet): $600
Supplementary food funds so that the Damany does not suffer food insecurity: $2,000
Tuition at CCRI for 1 year: $12,544

Total: $21,544

We understand this is a big ask but any help to support this young community member would be greatly appreciated. To start, we are setting our goal to $7,000 to secure housing. We will continue to raise it if we feel we can meet his full need of $21,544 so he can go back to school. Let’s get Damany back on his feet!
