Running has always been a part of my life, but this year I’m taking it further than I ever have before by running my first marathon. I was motivated to take on the Chicago Marathon not only because I want to push myself physically and mentally, but also because of what it means I can contribute to Girls in the Game.

As a youth development researcher and coach, much of my work and lived experience has focused on how sport can be a powerful context for growth, not just competition. When done well, sport teaches young people how to take up space, trust their bodies, build confidence, and develop resilience. Yet far too often, girls are pushed out of sport early, especially girls of color and those from marginalized communities, because the systems around them were not designed with their needs in mind. Girls in the Game is changing that. Their programs use sport and movement as tools for holistic youth development, creating spaces where girls feel safe, supported, and empowered. They center joy, belonging, and leadership alongside physical activity, helping girls build skills that extend far beyond the playing field. As someone raising a child, coaching youth, and dedicating my career to youth development through sport, this mission is deeply personal. Every mile I run represents the girls who deserve access to programs that believe in them, invest in them, and help them stay connected to movement and community.
