Dear MKM Family,

We are pleased to invite you to our 2nd virtual fundraising soiree, A Mindful Evening of Gratitude, where we will be honoring Dr. Amishi Jha as our fourth Ambassador of Mindfulness as well as one Mindfulness Champion with an award for outstanding service to their school.

This past year has been full of challenges, transitions, and highlights. As the global pandemic rages into its 20th month, many of us are settling into the new school year and heading into the busy holiday season with a changed perspective on life. For us this year brought a heightened sense of present-time awareness and a daily feeling of gratitude. Here are a couple things we at MKM have felt most grateful for this year.

Discomfort. Pandemic life is not comfortable. We have felt the pain in reduced enrollment for online classes. The days of in-person classes seem like ancient history, but they’ll be back soon! By noticing when the feeling arises and treating it with curiosity rather than aversion, we can shift our perspective, build insight, and grow. Discomfort is a gift to be grateful for.

Community. Without you we wouldn’t be here. Our participants, instructors, donors, staff, volunteers, Board members, partners, and advocates are our life blood. Because of you we were able to provide workshops to 1,851 and full programs to 621 people. In addition, we were able to train 344 Mindfulness Champions. Most of the 2,816 participants impacted by our mindfulness classes this year will share the benefits of mindfulness with the thousands of children with whom they interact.

This year’s special fundraising event is dedicated to gratitude, however we all may experience it. We look forward to having you join us to hear more about our new Mindfulness Champions program we launched in partnership with the Miami Heat, Florida Blue, and MDCPS, to bring mindfulness into every school in Miami-Dade County. Even if you are unable to join us, please show your love for our faculty and staff by supporting us in whatever amount you are able. Our Full Experience tickets include a gift bag delivered to your door (Miami only) with a sushi-style vegan (nut based) cheese box containing a smoked cheddar cheese, truffle white cheese, crunchy crackers, papaya confit, micro-greens and dried nuts from Plant Miami, two artisan chocolate bars from CAO Chocolates, a bottle of wine, and a can of Moment (rooibos blood orange botanical water), an adaptogen-infused beverage.

Teachers are VIPs at Mindful Kids and enjoy discounted tickets. Anyone can purchase additional wine and cheese gift bags with our ADD ON option. (Don't forget to leave your delivery details.) I truly hope to see you all back here on the Zoom live event November 12th.

With my warmest appreciation,

Sandy Skelaney | Executive Director

Dr. Amishi Jha, PhD is Director of Contemplative Neuroscience and Professor of Psychology at the University of Miami. Prior to her current post, she was an Assistant Professor at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her B.S in Biological Psychology from the University of Michigan, her Ph.D in Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) from the University of California–Davis, and her post-doctoral training at the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University in functional neuroimaging. With grants from the Department of Defense and several private foundations, she leads research on the neural bases of attention and the effects of mindfulness-based training programs on cognition, emotion, resilience, and performance in education, corporate, elite sports, first-responder, and military contexts.

In her laboratory at the University of Miami, she uses functional MRI, electrophysiological recordings and behavioral analysis techniques to understand why our attention sometimes fails us, and if it can be trained for greater focus and less distractibility. She launched the first-ever study to offer mindfulness training tools to active duty military service members as they prepared for deployment. What she has discovered is that without intervention, attention is compromised, and attentional lapses increase. Yet, with mindfulness training, attention can be strengthened and protected. In addition to her own published body of research, her work has been featured in many outlets including TED.com, NPR, and Mindful Magazine. In addition, she has been invited to present her work to NATO, the UK Parliament, the Pentagon, and at the World Economic Forum. In her forthcoming book, Peak Mind (Harper Collins, 2021), she shares her discoveries on how attention can be trained for optimal performance and well-being.

About Mindful Kids Miami

Mindful Kids Miami, Inc. (MKM) is a tax-exempt, 501(c)3 non-profit that offers a catalog of gold-standard mindfulness programs and workshops to carry out our mission of bringing the benefits of mindfulness to all kids in Miami-Dade County. We scale our reach and impact through training adults who interact with children daily, such as educators, to embody mindfulness for themselves and to share age-appropriate activities that they learn with their students. Our signature programs for adults are the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, and the 8-week Mindful Teachers Training Program (MTTP) developed in-house. Miami-Dade County Public Schools provides master plan points to educators for our core programs, making them a regular offering in the MDCPS professional development catalog. This summer we launched the Mindfulness Champions Initiative, an ambitious project to designate and train one Champion in each of Miami-Dade’s 354 public schools to act as an advocate for bringing mindfulness into the schools and a liaison with a direct link to ongoing support from our staff and programs.

❤️ With much appreciation for our gracious supporters.
