Sitting in the Pasture—A Plea for Monthly Heroes

Sometimes, in the quiet of the pasture, you catch yourself thinking: How do I keep this going? The sun is going down, the horses are cropping grass nearby, and little Comet, our newest baby, is curled up in his blanket, dreaming his cosmic dreams. Bumble, our pregnant mare, swishes her tail and presses her big belly up to my hand, and I know that new life is just around the corner.

Every day here is a miracle—but it’s also a marathon.

People see the happy endings: the piglets wallowing, Princess Pickles doing her victory lap, Comet learning what love means in a world that wasn’t made easy for him. What they don’t see are the endless loads of laundry, the mountains of bedding and pee pads, the vet bills, the therapy appointments, the farrier’s visits, the heat lamps in every barn, the food for every belly—canine, equine, and porcine alike.

Comet is just one pup. He needs physical therapy, a lifetime of wheelchairs as he grows, bedding that gets changed three times a day, and medical care that doesn’t come cheap. He’s one of 18 special needs dogs here—each with their own meds, appointments, and quirks. And Bumble? She’ll need more vet care before and after her baby is born, and a safe, warm space to land, no matter what.

Since 2020, conditions have become more challenging. Fewer people visit, fewer donations come in. The needs never slow down. The bills don’t wait. And the only thing that keeps the doors open, the water running, and the lights on for these animals is the love—and the monthly support—of people like you.
