Invisible Histories is excited to announce a new chapter: we’re relocating to a dedicated archival space in Charlotte, NC in 2025. The space will open in 2026 and will allow us to grow our collections, deepen our impact, and continue our vital work preserving LGBTQ history across the South.

But we need your help.

Through the generous giving of an anonymous donor via the Tides Foundation, we will receive a $15,000 matching grant to cover the costs of moving our at-risk collections to our new home location. So we need YOU to help us raise our goal of $15,000 to meet the match!

The $30,000 raised will cover the cost to relocate the materials in a way that protects them from damage and allow us to secure enough temporary storage so that our collections remain accessilbe while we are waiting for the new space to open. Keeping these collections safe AND accessible is our main goal and we are asking our supportive community to help us to do this.

In a time of escalating anti-LGBTQ legislation, censorship, and political violence, our physical archive is more than a building. It is an act of resistance.

By donating, you are living in the memory of those who fought before you and directly contributing to the preservation of their legacies. You are ensuring that queer and trans lives, stories, and histories are not erased—but honored, protected, and shared.

History is a weapon of liberation wielded by the marginalized. That is precisely why it is under attack by those who seek to silence and harm us.

Invisible Histories acts as an intermediary between institutions, organizations, and everyday folks. We strive to break barriers between organizations and their local communities to ensure that preservation and research exist in a co-productive and relationship centered way. In addition to direct collection and preservation, Invisible Histories is invested in providing scholars with direct access to materials as well as creating a network of people conducting LGBTQ Southern archiving, preservation, education and research to make scholarship more accessible. We focus on providing education around the Queer South to those within and outside the region through speaking, exhibiting, online materials, and publications. Finally, Invisible Histories seeks to help develop a new generation of scholars working in the Queer South as well as work alongside other professionals in the field to develop best practices for this work.
