ourHOME seeks to create a world where everyone belongs. We provide housing options for adults with diverse developmental differences so they can experience independence, belonging, and the dignity of maximizing their potential. Alabama has over 650,000 adults with cognitive disabilities. Demand for affordable and accessible housing for people with disabilities in Alabama is astronomical, with a 50% increase expected over the next 20 years. The organization was born out of a shared vision among families and advocates who desired more than traditional care model.

The model for ourHOME takes a unique approach to sustainable spaces where dignity, community, and independence are at the forefront. We secure ownership of housing property, and equip that property to support its residents. We then train the residents to live independently, educate and involve the community to support success while also raising funds to pay off the property so that rental income sustains operations long-term. Then repeat the process throughout Birmingham and the rest of Alabama!

This year marks the opening of our first residence in Homewood, designed as an interdependent living community. But the property needs some work! With a construction project around the corner, ourHOME’s Mustache Bash will make the property renovations possible and underscore our commitment to cultivating environments where individuals thrive, experience belonging, and have community cheering for their success!
