Story

The African American Society is proud to announce the start of a new scholarship award this Spring alongside our University scholarship. The scholarship, specifically for graduating high school seniors from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, is dedicated in the name of Michael Chappman.

Michael Chappman was a 17-year-old rising high school senior from Cleveland, Ohio that attended Ginn Academy and was the star quarterback for John Hay High School. In early July of 2017, Michael was shot by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting leaving him hospitalized for 17 days. Despite appearing to be making a solid recovery, on July 23, 2017, Michael lost his life due to suffering complications from his injuries.

The Michael Chappman Scholarship will be dedicated to spreading awareness about gun violence in the community, promoting fair justice, and supporting the success of rising Cleveland high school seniors who possess the same heart, courage, and spirit as Michael did.
