As a Q'anjob'al Maya-owned enterprise, the MEDC fosters leadership within the community, creates socially responsible investment opportunities, and provides access to competitive capital for Maya entrepreneurs.
As a nonprofit that strives to care for both People and Planet with our projects, we also work hand in hand with the community to leverage our land and interpersonal networks to provide services that take care of the health, education, human rights, and dreams of all our Relatives.
Due to genocide in Guatemala from 1960 - 1996, the Maya are the largest displaced Indigenous nation in the United States. An estimated 3 million live alongside many communities in the US, with ~15,000 in Nebraska and ~4,000 in Omaha, where our new headquarters is located.
While this acquisition of 8.5 acres of forest and community garden in North Omaha will largely be cared for by local Maya volunteers, our larger vision and developments will require expert teams of agriculturalists, renovators, organizers, and landscapers.
We are raising funds to compensate our incredible leaders so we might soon provide the Maya people and North Omaha with affordable and free organic foods, the use of a community education center and kitchen, sustainably-grown native plant medicines, and a haven to gather for spiritual and cultural practices.
We are humbled by and grateful for your contribution. Blessings!
