As many of you know, I have been a proud Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence (NDS) employee for over 6 years.
These last two years will go down in history as the most challenging time for Next Door Solutions. They responded to the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the enduring effect that sheltering in place with an abuser has on victims of violence and their children.
During the pandemic, NDS' programs and services were designated as essential and NDS pivoted to working remotely for the protection of the public, and staff. I am proud to share with you that the programs and services never stopped. NDS' shelter and 24-hour crisis hotline remained in operation without interruption and various forms of technology allowed staff to maintain contact with existing clients and connect with new clients seeking help.
When the agency’s story began back in 1971 very little support or resources existed for survivors. Now over fifty years later, Next Door Solutions continues to pioneer important efforts in Santa Clara County. They provide training and technical assistance for health care systems and clinics in screening for victims and making referrals. They also conduct training in universal education so that people experiencing domestic violence can more effectively access support and services.
The services have expanded significantly and NDS had to be flexible to meet the needs of the community. I expect we will be dealing with the magnitude of this public health crisis for many years to come and I am asking for your help addressing its impact on our clients.
