GRACE
When Grace initially arrived at Next Door Solutions (NDS), she was seeking help to escape her abusive partner and live her life freely. As a mother of four, she struggled to support all her children financially. She expressed that during the initial days of COVID her ex had kicked her out of their house in addition to physically assaulting her. At the time, she was not in immediate need of shelter but was interested in exploring options because her ex was stalking and harassing her. Fortunately, NDS Advocates were able to assist Grace with legal assistance, support groups, therapy, employment, financial support, and eventually housing.
Next Door Solutions helped Grace assess the risk from her ex-partner and plan for her safety. Her Advocate shared information about filing for a domestic violence restraining order in family court. We were also able to refer her to our legal nonprofit partners that assist with immigration law, so Grace could begin applying for a U-Visa.
While the legal proceedings were taking place, Grace joined our weekly support groups and was referred to our Spanish-speaking therapy sessions. This was another step to healing and self-sufficiency. To this day she continues to access support services.
In October 2022, Grace reached out for rental assistance stating she was behind on rent and needed financial assistance for October and potentially additional months. During this time, her ex-partner had broken her car windows and she expressed that her income would barely cover her family’s rent. Grace was also in need of support to cover alternative transportation until her car could be fixed.
Next Door Solutions did not hesitate to support her. The housing team assisted with two months' worth of rent and covered the cost to repair the broken windows through Next Door Solution’s Housing First program.
We are happy to share that with NDS’ help, Grace has found stability in her life. With our services and advocates, she was able to accomplish what she had hoped to achieve. Today, her anxiety and fear are less severe. She has gained more strength and self-esteem to continue working towards her goals and get back on her feet.
