My parents immigrated to America in the late 1990s in hopes of raising a new family and providing better education to their children. When they first arrived, they didn't speak english so it was very hard for them to get access to legal services. It was even harder for them to pay for it as a new couple with 2 children in a new country. Luckily, they were able to connect with other friends and attorneys who have given them advice on understanding the immigration system. Because of them, my parents have successfully been able to navigate the immigration system. We are still connected with these friends and attorneys and continue to provide ongoing support for other immigrants in our community.
Without people who are dedicated to immigrant rights, my parents would not have been able to access legal support. NYJFON has alway been an advocate for immigrant rights and I am so grateful for NYJFON for providing free and low-cost services to immigrants. It is more important now than ever before.
