Story

For over a hundred years, the South Bay Historic Chinese Cemetery in San Jose has been a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Chinese American community. Founded in 1902, this small plot of land holds the remains of more than 249 Chinese pioneers who helped shape the United States into the nation it is today. However, the cemetery's historical significance extends beyond just its physical presence; it represents a beacon of hope for generations of Chinese Americans who faced discrimination and prejudice.

As a non-profit corporation, our goal is to preserve the cemetery's history and honor the legacy of these pioneers. Through archiving and recording oral histories, we aim to provide resources for current and future historians. Our most significant project, however, is to build a monument that will forever memorialize the Chinese Americans who lived and died in Santa Clara and those who still rest in the cemetery. We estimate that this mural will cost up to $10,000, and we need your help to make this vision a reality.

The South Bay Historic Chinese American Cemetery Corporation is responsible for maintaining the cemetery's appearance, educating the community at large about the cemetery's historic significance, and adding only those improvements that will not detract from its historic value. Our organization is governed by a Board of Directors and several officers, and anyone who agrees with our goals can apply for membership.

We also aim to keep the history of the cemetery alive in the next generation by engaging with the community through a regular newsletter showcasing opportunities and work from local community members. From collaborating with Camp Kahani for an after-school program for Asian-Americans creating a Ching Ming Jie themed magazine to hosting a writer's workshop for kids emphasizing researching history for inspiration, we are dedicated to providing educational opportunities for all.

The South Bay Historic Chinese Cemetery is a vital piece of history that must be preserved. It is one of the last few remaining Chinese American historic sites in the United States, and it represents the struggles and triumphs of the Chinese American community. Your support will ensure that this legacy is not forgotten and that future generations can learn from the bravery and resilience of these pioneers. Join us in our mission to preserve the history of the South Bay Historic Chinese Cemetery and honor the lives of those who rest there.
