Unhoused in Upshur (UIU), a program of Appalachian Mutual Aid Collective (AMAC), works with organizations and individuals to overcome barriers to housing. Some of our initiatives include

work to get an overnight warming center up and running in Buckhannon, WV where there is not a homeless shelter of any type,

street outreach where we get to know our unhoused neighbors and connect them with a wide range of resources,

our summer and winter backpack program,

temporary hotel stays while we work alongside families to get them in housing again, and

housewarming hauls.

AMAC has long term goals of creating a solidarity center and an intentional community where everyone, including our unhoused neighbors, finds community. These places will include community gathering rooms for all kinds of activities and workshops, a pay what you may cafe, free store, and more. We also plan for the solidarity center to be a new home for our program Free Meals Appalachia.

We work together to build a world where everyone has a safe home.
