Empower Buford Highway with Free English Classes

Learning English is the key to opportunity, connection, and confidence for immigrant families in DeKalb and Gwinnett.

Since 2023, Los Vecinos de Buford Highway has partnered with Georgia State University to offer free, 12-week English classes. These classes are family-friendly, parents don’t have to worry about childcare. Children are welcome and supported while their caregivers learn. With an accessible community location offering evening sessions, we make it possible for hardworking families to attend.

Unfortunately, we've lost key funding that kept one of our classes running. We are currently only serving families in Doraville which means adults in our community are missing the opportunity to learn English for free. To continue offering free, high-quality English classes each year, we must raise $15,000 to cover professors, books, and materials for 100 adults and their families.

We will continue sharing the stories of our students detailing the tremendous impact of this program in their families. From helping a local high school senior apply to college and for scholarships; she got accepted with a scholarship to Oglethorpe University, to some of our students getting their GEDs, and helping parents gain more confidence at work and in advocating for their children at school.
