Mario has lived on the street for his entire life. He was neutered about 5 years ago by rescuers. He was always the first one to come up to his feeders when they stopped by. He has been looking noticeably thinner for awhile and is very congested. We trapped him and brought him to the vet.

Poor Mario has a laundry list of items to try and tackle. He’s starting antibiotics today for a urinary tract infection. Then he will have another sedated exam where we will see his urine values, as the ones from this week indicate kidney disease. His footpads are inflamed. What we know for sure is that he has FIV and will need a dental. Depending on his temperament, we will be looking for a home or a sanctuary for him.

FIV cats can live as long as non-fiv (Mario is estimated to be 8) and can live with non fiv. As long as everyone is spayed/neutered and there’s no deep biting going on, people often have a mix of fiv and non fiv. Mario likely wouldn’t have these infections if he hadn’t been living outside his whole life.

We are learning with this small, mostly older colony of 6- the needs are high! And while we are lucky in this city to have access to any discounted veterinary care- it’s still expensive. We can’t do this without you! Between his next sedated exam and eventual dental, we will need to raise at the low end- $1500. If we find a sanctuary to take him (if that’s the need) there will be costs associated with that.
