The fallout from the federal government shutdown is deepening, and thousands of San Diegans are about to lose the food support they rely on. Beginning Saturday, November 1, nearly 400,000 people across our county will lose their monthly CalFresh (SNAP) benefits. Additional federal programs like Head Start, which provides preschool and daily meals for children from families with low income, will also lose funding. Families who were already struggling to make ends meet are now wondering how they will put food on the table next week.
More than 850,000 San Diegans regularly cannot afford nutritious food, and that number will significantly increase as federal fundings cuts and delays continue. At Partnership for a Better San Diego, our food pantry is stepping up to meet this growing need. We are sourcing more food and essential household supplies, making it simple for families to apply for assistance, and working closely with union and community leaders to make sure no one is left behind.
Because of supporters like you, PBSD can act quickly when a crisis strikes. Right now, your help is needed more than ever.
Even if SNAP and other federal programs are restored, the reality is that thousands of working families, seniors, union members, and veterans in San Diego will still face food insecurity every day. Rising costs of housing, transportation, and groceries continue to push many to the margins. Consistent community support ensures that PBSD can keep our doors open, shelves stocked, and families fed, not just during emergencies, but all year long.
Every $1 you give helps provide fresh, healthy food for local working families, children, and seniors who need it most. Your support ensures that our community stays nourished, connected, and cared today and in the challenging months to come.
Please consider donating to help San Diego families get through this crisis and build long-term food security for our community.
