Why Project Koru — And Why Now

Cancer changes everything — especially for young adults. During years meant for building careers and independence, many survivors instead are navigating isolation, uncertainty, and the challenge of reclaiming their lives after diagnosis.

We serve young adult cancer survivors ages 19–39 through outdoor adventure and survivor-led community — creating space to heal, reconnect, and regain confidence. This age group is often overlooked in traditional cancer support, yet their need for connection is profound.

Since 2011, Project Koru has supported more than 740 survivors through 62 camps and retreats, offering something many say they can’t find anywhere else: a community of people who truly get it.

Our impact is clear:

100% of campers felt good about their Project Koru experience
90% built meaningful friendships and were able to talk openly about their cancer journey
75%+ reported improved emotional well-being and were able to process trauma

But the numbers only tell part of the story.

PK is led by survivors — individuals who understand firsthand the physical and emotional toll of cancer and stay involved because the experience is transformative.

Today, more than 500 young adult cancer survivors are waiting for that same opportunity.

That’s why we’re rallying our community around a meaningful goal: 2,025 donations of any size before the end of 2025. Every gift — whether $5, $25, or $100 — helps expand access to camps and ensures that no young adult survivor faces life after cancer alone.
