FACT: PPA is a language disorder that gradually impairs a person's ability to speak or comprehend language over time. This results in communication difficulties that may mimic broader dementia.

FACT: There is an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 people with Behavioral Variant FTD and PPA in the United States.

FACT: About one-third of people with PPA experience clinically significant depression. (Medina & Weintraub, 2017).

FACT: Combined with social withdrawal and loss of independence that individuals with PPA endure, it is critical that they find ways of staying connected and engaged in meaningful activity. (Mahendra & Arkin, 2004). The same is true for care partners and other family members and friends.

FACT: Individuals with PPA and their families/friends can benefit from acquiring new communication strategies from speech language pathologists. Families can also learn new communication strategies and resources through group programs.

MnCAN's programs for families and people with PPA aim to address the needs of one of the most underserved populations in language disorders. Individuals with PPA are often referred to either Alzheimer's programs or aphasia centers. Neither option is appropriate in this case, which often leaves individuals with PPA adrift in our healthcare system.

Minnesota Connect Aphasia Now (MNCAN) exists to support people who are living with the impact of aphasia, including PPA. MnCAN's Staying Connected: An Education and Support Program for Persons with PPA has the potential to fill the existing void and provide education for better outcomes, planning and support for families dealing with PPA.

Can you help support the Minnesota PPA community?

As a part of Aphasia Awareness Month, MnCAN's groups and programs are on a mission to raise awareness,
share their experiences, and raise funds for MnCAN throughout the month of June.

Every $20 gift supports one family dealing with PPA to attend a 90 minute support group facilitated by a speech pathologist.

A gift of $240 supports one family dealing with with PPA to attend a PPA support group for one year.

All gifts support the Staying Connected Program and provide scholarships for those who cannot afford the tuition to attend.

Due to increased demand for services, MnCAN aims to start an additional support group to meet the needs. MnCAN cannot grow to meet the demand for services without funds to support them.

Our goal of $2,400 would ensure participation for an additional 10 families to attend a new PPA support group
