Pacific Seafaring Foundation:
Sailing, Seamanship, and Preservation

The mission of the Pacific Seafaring Foundation, a DBA under the West Coast Seafaring Society, is to partner with the public on maritime arts, traditions, history and culture in Northern California and the San Francisco Bay. Our two major areas of engagement are classic boat preservation and on-the-water sailing programs which were made possible by the generous donation of a couple of extraordinary yachts and a group of dedicated volunteers and sponsors committed to our cause.

Our mission is fulfilled through hands-on educational programs and experiential learning opportunities with historic sailing vessels, via activities in collaboration with other maritime heritage organizations.

The donation of the 52-foot gaff schooner, named Yankee, and the 54-foot yawl, named Ocean Queen V, enable us to fulfill our mission through hands-on educational programs and experiential learning opportunities with historic sailing vessels, via activities in collaboration with other maritime heritage organizations.

As a registered 501-C-3 non-profit organization, we face the challenge of raising funds to take care of the costs of the entire operation, and to continue our preservation efforts to keep the Yankee and Ocean Queen V in service for the public.

Supporting Community-based Nonprofits/Agencies
with Sailing and Seamanship Experiences

What makes the Pacific Seafaring Foundation unique is our model of service that is focused on supporting other nonprofit organizations with vital on-the-water sailing programs operated on our vessels.

For example, our sailing programs are available to provide community-based nonprofits, such as the Boys and Girls Club, Sea Scouts, YMCA, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts (to name just a few) with the rare opportunity for their youth participants to experience the San Francisco Bay aboard a historic sailing vessel and connect with the Bay's environment first-hand. Our programs are also available to serve the needs of state, county, and city park and recreational agencies.

Your contribution ensures that our vital sailing programs are available to community-based nonprofits and agencies regardless of financial barriers. The Pacific Seafaring Foundation has never turned down a scholarship request.

Classic Boat Preservation

In the past few months we have managed to organize a 501C3 non-profit, welcome the donation of use of a beautiful yacht, Ocean Queen V, and the donation of the Yankee, a legendary San Francisco Bay schooner needing some restoration. Ocean Queen V is in operation and fullfilling our mission objectives with numerous on-the-water experential educational saling programs; However, the Yankee is in the preservation stage and we're working towards getting the vessel in operation like the Ocean Queen V.

The Yankee, built and launched in San Francisco in 1906 has spent all her years cruising and racing in the Bay, in recent years primarily in MMBA events. She began her racing by winning the first ‘Farallon Race’ in 1907. As the pandemic began she was, as above, in the midst of a project when the world came to a halt with her spars, rigging and some hull parts in storage. Today, she is our ‘preservation’ project as we proceed with the needed repairs and assembly to put her back in active service on San Francisco Bay.

Although we are blessed with solid volunteer efforts, there are always the usual needs for funding to make their efforts effective. As a yachtsman you likely know well the costs of merely keeping these boats. When one adds the programs and materials the need becomes substantial.

We welcome and honor donors and sponsors at all levels, who in essence make this venture possible for the benefit of the sport and the communities involved.
