Rugby for Resilience, How Pacers Sports Initiative is Turning Struggle into Strength

In the narrow streets and open dusty fields of our community, rugby balls are more than just sports equipment, they are passports to a better life.

The young players of Pacers Sports Initiative don’t just train for the next match; they train for survival, dignity, and hope. Many come from vulnerable family homes headed by single parents, relatives, or guardians struggling to make ends meet. Some have lost parents to illness, others face the daily grind of poverty. Yet, on the rugby pitch, they are not defined by their hardships; they are teammates, leaders, and dreamers.

Why rugby?
Because rugby is more than a game. It is a school of life teaching discipline, teamwork, respect, and resilience. Every tackle is a lesson in standing firm. Every try is a reminder that goals can be reached with effort and support.

Through rugby, Pacers Sports Initiative connects sport to real life impact:

Education & Skills Training keeping youth in school, offering vocational skills, and preparing them for decent work opportunities.
Community Mental Health & Wellbeing using the trust and friendship built on the field to create safe spaces for counseling, emotional healing, and resilience training.
Girls Empowerment – ensuring girls have equal access to rugby and leadership, breaking gender stereotypes, and empowering them to shape their futures.

We work within the children’s home settings, supporting them where they live so that transformation doesn’t just happen on the pitch it happens in their daily lives.

The Change is Happening
Take the story of Sarah, a 15-year-old raised by her grandmother. Before joining Pacers, she struggled with confidence and faced constant pressure to drop out of school to help at home. Rugby gave her a community that believed in her. Through our mentorship and academic support, Sarah’s grades have improved, and she now leads her school’s girls’ rugby team, proving to her peers that girls belong in every space, even those traditionally reserved for boys.
