I remember being on the edge of my seat in my first and second grade classes during story time. I was so fortunate that my teachers loved Roald Dahl's work and infused my childhood imagination with stories about big friendly giants, oversized peaches, oompa loompas, and a little girl who was intelligent beyond her years and possessed magical powers. One incredible teacher incorporated 'Writers' Workshop' into her curriculum, a time set aside each month for students to write and illustrate their own books. It was SO. much. fun.
Those experiences catalyzed my love of reading, writing, drawing, and creating. I was lucky to grow up in a household where the fun didn't stop at home. My parents were able to provide us with plenty of books and resources. Looking back, it seems like such a fundamental part of any childhood. Now, as an adult, my love for reading is stronger than ever. During quarantine, virtual book clubs were my primary social outlet. Reading is what enables me to do my job and learn new skills. Up against almost any life challenge, books have been a refuge, a trusted advisor, and a reminder that I'm not alone no matter what I'm facing.
Every child deserves an opportunity to learn how to read and to have books of their own at home. Page Ahead's signature program is called Book Up Summer where at-risk children get to select 12 books to take home and read over the summer. This is proven to be effective at preventing 'summer slide,' the loss of academic skills when school is not in session. This is important now more than ever with challenges presented by the pandemic and remote learning.
Please join me and donate as generously as you can to help support Page Ahead in providing books to children in need. Don't forget to register below to join us on March 31 for our virtual luncheon :) Hope to 'see' you there!
