Support Permanently Affordable, Resident-Controlled Housing
Note: If you'd like to make a larger, tax deductible donation (over $1,500), please see our website here.
Our Goal: Secure 88-units of forever-affordable, resident-owned housing in Adams Morgan, DC. We want to preserve affordable housing in our wonderful but increasingly unaffordable neighborhood, and we want to make it possible for regular people to participate in democratic home ownership here for decades to come.
Our Story: When our building went on the market last year, we formed a Tenant Association and took a vote on how we wanted to use our Tenant Opportunity to Purchase (TOPA) rights, a unique DC law that gives us the chance to buy our own building. Together, we decided to turn our building into an innovative model of affordable, community-controlled housing: a limited-equity co-op.
Our Need: We need community support and investment to make our goal a reality. We are actively seeking donations and low-interest community loans from individuals and organizations. We would also appreciate your help spreading the word about our project, hosting fundraising and community events, sharing stories and advice, and any other forms of support you might be able to offer.
We need to raise money today in order to:
1) Pay an earnest money deposit to extend our TOPA process (Done! ✅ – thank you!)
2) Pay a retainer fee to our co-op developer ($2,000)
3) Pay for an inspection required by HUD (Approximately $11,000)
4) Pay for additional surveys and maintenance consultations ($10,000+)
We also need large-scale donations and low-interest community loans to offset the building purchase cost, keeping share prices low and co-op fees affordable over the long term. Our 501(3)(c) fiscal sponsor can ensure these gifts are tax-deductible.
