Picturing Nature with Thomas Strimpel

Thomas Strimpel, our resident artist and JBS education coordinator, leads a painting event using our taxidermy mounts, pelts, skulls and materials collected from the wetland as subject matter. He'll guide you in choosing your subject, sketching out your idea and creating your painting with watercolor techniques. All skills levels are welcome.

Open to all ages. We'll provide watercolor kits.

About Your Instructor

Thomas Strimpel, JBS education coordinator, holds a degree from the University of North Texas in Integrative Studies, with a focus on anthropology. He also has a deep passion for the visual arts and enjoys illustrating plants and animals in his free time.

Before graduation, Thomas completed an illustration featuring over a dozen pollinator species native to North Texas. The piece was later printed on a 6-foot by 12-foot mural for display on the side of the Community Garden on UNT’s campus. This student-led garden was a space where Thomas spent a great deal of time between classes, seeding and growing new plants while gaining a deeper relationship with nature.

Thomas is especially interested in natural history and conveying the beauty and diversity of life through art. One of his illustrations is on permanent display at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart, Australia, featuring an image of an extinct giant marsupial alongside the reconstructed skeleton of the same animal.

Thomas has experience in a wide range of mediums, including digital illustration, watercolor and oil painting, and traditional sketching.
