The FAM177A1 Research Fund was created by Jill and Doug Hawkins, whose children, Charlotte and Cooper, have FAM177A1 Disorder. Jill (Minich, member of the Edwards family) and Doug grew up together in Piseco. They were married in Piseco 24 years ago and now reside in Seattle, WA.

FAM177A1 Disorder is a rare genetic disease that causes developmental delays, seizures, behavior challenges, progressive motor decline, and other debilitating issues. In 2020, Charlotte and Cooper were among the first in the world diagnosed with this disease. Today, there are less than 20 cases known worldwide but that number is growing now that the gene has been identified and genetic sequencing is becoming more common.

There are currently no disease-specific treatments for FAM177A1 Disorder however, science has evolved, making treatments and cures for diseases like this possible. For rare diseases, the burden of research and development of treatments almost always falls on the patient group.

The FAM177A1 Research Fund is creating a united patient and scientific community and researchers are discovering ways this previously understudied gene is vital for health.
