See what a dollar can do.

Friends,

When Walter Anderson set out to paint the walls of the famed Ocean Springs Community Center in 1951, he did it as an act of civic pride. A national landmark, these sprawling murals assert the role of southern landscapes in shaping our understanding of society and of ourselves. Walter covered the walls of the 3,000-square-foot public space for the sum of a dollar, a check he never cashed.

First, the murals were misunderstood. Later, they became a fixture in the life of the growing community. Now, they’re treasured as the most valuable single Mississippi artwork ever created.

Like all of our galleries and spaces, Walter’s murals are invitations to activation. Our mission to “inspire lifelong curiosity and connection to the natural world” means immersive environmental excursions and insightful lectures, science festivals and culinary events, workshops and camps, live concerts and costume parties.

A gift to WAMA is a recognition of the opportunity that we all have to take action—to balance preservation of our past with aspiration for the future of our state and region.

Donate today. See what a dollar can do.

With gratitude,
Mattie Codling
Executive Director & Chief Curator
