Organized by the Friends of Brendan Sexton, New York’s beloved former Sanitation Commissioner and civic leader, who passed away last November, the first symposium in a series of events is scheduled for Friday, April 19, at NYU’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

The Symposium – dedicated to Brendan’s legacy of civic leadership and his uncanny ability to bring together diverse groups often with differing views – will focus on the status of New York’s progress in adequately addressing “difficult to decarbonize” segments of the economy, including transportation, industry and solid waste/wastewater. While NY’s mid-century GHG reduction targets are clear and strong, the path to achieving those targets is uncertain, with various options yet to be resolved, with support from stakeholders.

The goals of the discussion are to share timely information, including state-level efforts around the country – especially in California, long seen as the national leader in advancing climate solutions – and build consensus around pragmatic programs, policies and solutions to meet NY’s short-term, mid-term and longer-term targets in difficult-to-decarbonize sectors.
