Girls Night Out Altoona, Inc began as a small "pay it forward" project by Taunia Oechslin, a breast cancer fighter who was diagnosed when she was 36, and succumbed to the disease on April 9, 2009, at the age of 39. It was her goal that every female be educated about breast cancer, understand the value of early detection, and receive proper treatment.

The goal of GNOAI is to ensure that everyone understands the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection. The funds raised by this committee stays in Blair and its contigious counties. Funds are used to offer free screenings for the un or under insured individuals, funds are distributed to UPMC Altoona, Joyce Murtha Breast Cancer Center, & The Bob Perks Fund that assists breast cancer patients with household expenses while fighting the battle of their life. A portion of funds is also directed to breast cancer research at the Hershey Medical Center.
