From Research to the Classroom...

Why LUZ?

Learning to read is not simply a matter of exposure, practice, or effort. Literacy develops through the interaction of language, cognition, instruction, and the individual pathways through which learners process information.

Yet Spanish literacy instruction is too often approached through materials and instructional assumptions that do not fully reflect the structure of Spanish, the science of learning, or the variability that exists among learners.

LUZ was created in response to that gap.

Rather than adapting an English literacy model into Spanish, LUZ begins with Spanish itself: its sounds, syllabic structure, orthographic patterns, vocabulary, and progression toward increasingly complex reading.

And rather than designing instruction for an imagined “average” learner and adding accommodations later, learner variability is considered from the beginning.

The Work Is Already Underway

LUZ is not an idea waiting to be developed.

LAJAM has been building the framework lesson by lesson, examining how evidence can be translated into instructional design while preserving linguistic authenticity and accessibility.

The work includes student materials, instructional architecture, differentiated pathways, teacher guidance, assessment components, and the research and documentation necessary to prepare LUZ for its next stage.

Each design decision returns to a fundamental question:

How can we create Spanish literacy instruction that is rigorous enough to build strong readers and responsive enough to include learners who do not all reach reading in the same way?

What Comes Next

The next phase moves LUZ from development toward validation and classroom implementation.

complete the LUZ instructional framework and materials;
conduct expert review and validation;
prepare educators and classrooms for implementation;
produce materials required for the pilot;
collect and analyze implementation and learning data; and
document what we learn so future development is informed by evidence from real classrooms.
