The Rape Recovery Center offers a range of services for survivors and victims of sexual violence. These include crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, advocacy, medical accompaniment, and prevention education. Additionally, we conduct community outreach and education programs to raise awareness about sexual violence and promote consent culture in the state.

We work through a coordinated community response model to address sexual violence as a public health issue in Utah. Utah continues to rank in the top 10 states for sexual violence. Rape is the only violent crime higher than the national average. For the last 50 years, the Rape Recovery Center’s role has been to provide immediate confidential, and trauma-informed responses to sexual assaults in our community. Within six days of an assault, a victim of sexual assault has the option to have a sexual assault forensic examination performed. Alternatively, any victim of sexual assault has the right to decline forensic evidence collection but still seek medical attention following a sexual assault. When a victim of sexual assault arrives at the emergency room, the hospital personnel call a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), who will dispatch an advocate from our agency. The Mobile Response Team staff responds to the hospital within 30 minutes. The advocates on this team are certified crisis counselors and hold confidentiality, allowing survivors and victims to ask questions about their rights and options. This allows them to make informed decisions and choices that help them feel empowered following a violation of their body and consent.

Our services expand past the initial hospital visit, in some cases including follow-up advocacy, accompaniments to law enforcement interviews, and referrals to community and system-based agencies and organizations. Our helpline continues to serve as a general resource during office hours and is answered 24/7 through our partnership with UCASA (Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault). We also provide clinical therapy and groups that help move victims and survivors from crisis to recovery.

Lastly, our mission has always been to support survivors and to provide public education that prevents sexual violence before it happens. Each year, we provide consent and healthy relationship workshops across Salt Lake and Tooele County to nearly 5,000 community members, primarily youth ages 12 to 21, in hopes of creating a Utah free of sexual violence.
