Story

One in five humans are born with dyslexia. It is a lifelong condition. However, with proper therapy it can be treated and oftentimes those affected by the condition become thriving, creative and vital members of our community.

San Antonio is facing a critical shortage of dyslexia therapists, also known as Certified Academic Language Therapists or CALTS. Becoming a CALT is time intensive, but it is also quite expensive. Teachers often must pay for this training out of their own pockets and this education is not currently provided in their undergraduate or graduate school education.

The crisis is real, and the numbers are staggering:

Currently, 21,647 students are identified dyslexic in Texas Education Service Region 20.   We should have closer to 95,583 students identified and receiving services.

Region 20 needs 400-601 dyslexia therapists to properly treat dyslexic students currently identified. We currently have 31 in our community.

This has harrowing implications, not just for our children, but for the long-term vitality of our community.

Please consider donating to Celebrate Dyslexia today to provide scholarships for teachers in order to address this crisis.
