Today, May 5^th has been designated as a second and special “Giving Tuesday” called “GivingTuesdayNow,” a global day of giving and unity which is an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Hear some interviews from staff and patients on our Facebook page and our GiveButter Campaign.

GWYN'S STORY

“When you commit your life to nursing at 18 years old, you don’t have the foresight to anticipate what’s to come. It’s not possible to understand the compassion it takes to care for someone who has cancer; the empathy and gentleness it takes to tell someone they have HIV; the insight and patience necessary to encourage someone who is depressed, until you’ve lived it. It takes even more to tell those same people that they have been infected with a new virus that can be deadly.

COVID-19 is but a layer of a person who already has hurts and traumas and fears. As a 5-year nurse practitioner, I’ve found myself in the midst of a pandemic. Working at Raphael Health Center during this time has been unique. My colleagues and I are not always caring for the sickest of the sick physically with COVID-19, but have been on the front lines of educating, diagnosing, and treating those who are uninsured, who don’t speak English or who are homeless. We are caring for and counseling the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) who is paralyzed in fear about going back to work because she is afraid of being exposed. We are calming the anxieties of the 94-year- old woman who is afraid to be home alone.

We are spending our days and weeks making sure our chronically ill patients have the medication and support they need without coming in to the office. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have transitioned into being a primarily telehealth clinic where we can continue to encourage, educate, and treat our patients from their homes. We have been able to work as a team to formulate new and innovative ideas to allow our patients to get the care that they need. In addition, we have been able to diagnose and treat patients in our sick clinic designed to keep mildly ill patients with COVID-19 out of the emergency rooms."
