"Flapper" designed by Mimi Madden and Georgia Harden.
I have always loved figuring out ways to creatively re-use stuff, so I was excited to join the fun and make a design! On a recent trip to our town's Transfer Station, I got inspired by all the old games piled on the shelves of the recycling "store," so I chose several of them and brought everything plus a glue gun to the Cape for our vacation. My daughter Georgia and I had a blast creating a flapper-style dress from all the different game pieces--from monopoly money to Tinker Toys! I asked my lovely friend Rosemary to be my model...
For most of us, games bring back some great family memories, and this was a fun way to reassemble it all into something new.
We are such a nation of consumers, and in my own life I'm committed to slowing down that instinct to buy new, and stop and consider what I may already have or what I could save and recycle. It's a mindset, even in the little things--such as using more cloth rags instead of paper towels or having a compost pile (which I've had in one form or another for 40 years).
I hope to raise $1,500 that will go toward two worthy causes: the wonderful education programs at the American Mural Project, and Guiding Light Orphans, led by the amazing Jolly Lux, which serves thousands of Ugandans each year with medical services, vocational training for women, and greenhouses for sustainable farming practices.
